How to Play Tong-its
Tong-its is a popular 3-player rummy-type card game in the Philippines, combining strategy, skill, and a bit of luck.
The Objective
The goal is to empty your hand of all cards or have the lowest total hand points when the central deck is exhausted or "Diga" is called.
Game Setup
- Players: 3 players.
- Deck: Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers).
- Dealing: 12 cards are dealt to each player, while the Dealer receives 13 cards.
Card Values (Points)
Points only count for cards remaining in your hand at the end of the game:
- Aces: 1 point
- 2 through 9: Face value
- 10, Jack, Queen, King: 10 points each
Gameplay Flow
- Draw: Start your turn by drawing one card from the Deck or the top of the Discard pile (only if you can immediately use it in a down). Note: If you wish to call a "Diga" (Fight), you must do so at the start of your turn, before drawing.
- Down: Lay down valid groups of cards. A down is either a Trio (3-4 of a kind) or an Escalera (3+ sequential cards of the same suit). New Rule: Laying down a completely new set of cards (a new "Down") does not reset your Diga waiting period.
- Sapaw: Add your cards to your own or your opponents' existing downs to reduce your hand points. Note: Performing a Sapaw on your own existing downs (or being Sapawed by an opponent) resets your waiting period for calling "Diga".
- Discard: End your turn by placing one card on top of the Discard pile.
Winning the Game
- Tong-its: Successfully empty your hand by downing or "Sapaw-ing" all your cards.
- Diga (Fight): If you believe you have the lowest points, you can call "Diga" at the start of your turn (before drawing).
Prerequisites:
You must have at least one exposed down, and you must wait 2 full rounds since you last Sapawed your own cards (or since an opponent Sapawed you).
Importantly, laying down new sets of cards or drawing from the discard pile does not reset this waiting period.
If you have the lowest points, you win; otherwise, the challenger with the lowest points wins.
- Deck Empty: If no one wins before the deck runs out, the player with the lowest total hand points is declared the winner.
Burn Rule: Any player who has not exposed at least one down (dropped) by the end of the game is considered "Burned" and loses automatically, regardless of their hand points.
Strategy Tips
- Manage your Downs: Don't rush to lay down all your melds. Holding some in your hand can protect you from being "Sapawed" by opponents, which would reset your Diga timer.
- Watch the Discards: Keep track of what others are throwing. It gives you a clue about what melds they are building and what cards are safe to discard.
- The Diga Timing: Call "Diga" only when you are confident your hand points are the lowest. Remember that calling it at the wrong time might hand the win to an opponent.
- Avoid being Burned: Always try to expose at least one down early if the deck is getting low, to avoid the automatic loss from the Burn Rule.
